Day 10: What’s Your “Why” and Why It’s Important?

Are you familiar with the concept of the “why?” as it applies to goal setting. The “why” is your central motivator. It’s the main reason why you’re doing all this. Understanding your why is very important, as it will keep you moving towards that goal. Your why can be anything from a simple goal, like writing more, to something larger, like publishing a dozen books.

If you haven’t set your why yet, then you’re in the right place. Let’s go over the steps that you need to take in order to set your why.

What Is Your Why?

The main thing that you need to understand is that your why is your main motivator. So, spend a few minutes thinking about it. Why are you doing this? Why do you want to meet this goal? What will accomplishing it do for you? What will it mean to you?

Your why only needs to make sense to you. Not anyone else. This is a very personal thing. You don’t need to tell anyone else about your why, even if they ask! If you do share this information with someone else, then you certainly don’t need to go into any depth. Feel free to keep your why to yourself.

Choosing That Why

Now that you know what’s involved in your “why,” it’s time to choose one. Every goal that you set needs a why. This involves sitting back and thinking about why you want to meet that goal. What will meeting it give you? Why do you want to do whatever goal you’ve set your mind to? What will accomplishing it do for you? Answering those questions is how you choose your why.

Focusing On Your Why

Sometimes things disappear from your mind. If you’re incredibly busy, then this probably happens fairly often. You have a lot on your plate, which makes it hard to stay motivated and focused. However, when you focus on your why, then you won’t forget those goals. You need to keep your “why” in the forefront of your mind. Here are a few ways to do this:

  • Turn your why into a mantra and repeat it to yourself daily
  • Start your morning with a meditation in which you focus on your why
  • Keep a journal that focuses on your why
  • Tell your support system about your why so they can help you stay accountable
  • Do one thing that focuses on your why every single day

Now that you understand the concept of the “why,” it’s time to go out and set some “whys” for your goals. Go through the questions asked here and look deep into yourself to determine exactly why you’ve set those goals. Find your why and it will help you stay on track.
